OT: LCD screen for camera
(too old to reply)

I know it's OT, but maybe you gurus know where to get camera parts, too.

I have cracked the LCD on my new digi cam. It's only a small screen (a bit
over an inch square) but the manufacturers want 50 quid for a new screen.
(That's just for the screen, labour to install it is another 70 quid.)

I have opened it up and removed the old screen, and I reckon there is a
reasonable chance that I can install a new one correctly myself. Does anyone
know where I can source a replacement screen more cheaply, please?

The camera is a Minolta Dimage E500. There are loads of serial nos on the
back of the screen if anyone needs to know them.

Thanks.

Prolly the factory in China which makes them

... leave that as a challenge to you

otherwise £50 sounds a reasonable price

I in terchange screens from one camera to another all the time,
occasionally one doesnt work, one dies, goes wobbly, etc, there isnt a
lot to it, as long as you take the usual precautions, dont poke around
with the screwdriver, etc.

Try and find a faulty one of your model, bound to be some floating
around, or you can contact the screen maker, usually a few £'s from
someone in china, but will take some looking around, but you go to find
who made it first!

I had a similar problem with a Konica Minolta. My Minolta used a Casio
screen and it's most likely a Casio in yours. Minolta will only repair
for you and that's not worth bothering with. I contacted Casio and they
wanted something stupid like £150.
Your best bet is to hunt for a faulty camera with a working screen.
otherwise just buy another camera and keep/sell the old one for spares.

Not any more they won't. They've packed up cameras and have handed over
all their legacy servicing to Sony.

Hi,

I buy them from all over the place, auctions, ebay, free-ads. If I
wanted a new one, I would go straight to the Taiwan site of the maker
and contact them direct.

Laptops screens are the same,interchangable.

OK - thanks all - first I'll try ebay for a non-working version of the same
model but with a good screen.

Apart from that are you saying that screens all have the same interface, so
you can just plug in a replacement, it just might not be quite the same size
but it would probably work. That would be nice.

Sony (the new owners) are advertising on their website '01782 753366'
for repairs and '08700 104107' for consumer support. You could try
www.cpc.co.uk (or get their telephone number of the site and give them a
ring) if you are still keen to get an LCD display yourself.

BTW Morgan Computers have that camera (refurbished) for £83 in stock.

Is there any chance you purchased it on a credit card and it's covered
with accidental insurance?

If you purchased with a credit card, check the insurances the card provider
offer.

You may be pleasantly surprised by some kind of unconditional purchase
insurance cover!

Most card providers have some kind of insurance offfering as a freebie.

Ahoy!

Go to evilBay and do a worldwide search for something like 'glass LCD screen protector for DiMAGE E500'. If there is a generic 6 layer glass LCD screen protector, these are the exact same size as the
OEM screen, so remove the OEM screen, clean the edge of where the screen mounts and ensure it's totally dry and clean. If there is a glass LCD 6 layer screen, you just remove the adhesive protection
film which runs around the edge of the glass screen and adhere it onto the E500, though you need to align it perfectly first time as it's a PITA to remove and re-fit. The main brands are: GGS, FOTGA
and JYC. I've used all of them on various Sony/Minolta DSLR models and apart from being a protections screen (or replacement if needs be), but the text/images are much clearer and more defined in
addition to making the images appear much cleaner.

These LCD screens cost from £1.00 + from China/HK.

There is a dedicated K-M website that covers pretty much everything from printers, scanners, pocket cams to DSLR's. Your camera can be found at th URL below in addition to being able to download PDF
user manuals, any firmware and software:

http://www.konicaminoltasupport.com/DiMAGE-E500.3320.0.html

Please advise if this is of any use, as I've just seen this post was made in 2006 . . . 9 years ago! I see there's one for sale on Amazon (UK) with product images at:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B0009NDL0E/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used

The E500 appears to have a 2" LCD screen, and it may be impossible to source a generic one. The E500 was first released in 2005, so today, it's very old technology and not really financially viable
to repair unless you can source a screen for £1.00, otherwise it's time to offer it to a charity shop and move on to something more modern, though I did find a 2" Giottos LCD screen on evilBay. See
item: 271734553927 but I'm not familiar with the manufacturer or screen type, but it's a start.
