Digital Cameras for Indoor Low Light Use

I currently use a Canon A590IS which takes great outdoor photos but only
mediocre indoor photos, especially if the subject is over 10 feet away
from the camera. I'm interested in buying a new camera and I'm looking
for something that I can use indoors at children's parties or graduations
that will take decent photos beyond the range of the flash. Consumer
Reports noted that the Canon SD 780IS did well in indoor photography.

Can someone recommend a camera whose automatic setting will take decent
photos in indoor light but is still under $300?

Maybe one of the Sony "Exmor R". The thing that makes the two models
I list below better in low light is what Sony calls:
"back illuminated CMOS sensor technology"

I'm not sure if all Exmor R cameras are back illuminated; if they are,
then there are some other choices, including video cameras:

DSC-TX1 - this is a tiny one
DSC-WX1 - I think this is the size of your current camera.
It isn't out until sometime this month (2009 October)

Thanks Mark! I read the specs and this looks exactly like what I want.
I wonder if Sony uses the same technology in a camera that can take an
external flash. I'll have to spend some time reading the Sony web site.
